Barthélémy Statements for 52nd Venice Biennale

Chers Simon NJAMI, Fernando ALVIM,

J'ai le regret de devoir décliner l'invitation qui m'est faite de participer à votre projet pour la prochaine Biennale de Venise. En voici les raisons :
En tant qu'artiste né sur le continent africain, je tente de mener, depuis 20 ans un projet artistique pluridisciplinaire, international et ambitieux.
En tant que créateur, j'ai l'occasion d'observer, de pointer ou de souligner des dérives, des tragédies et des méfaits, comme dans "Head Above Water", partout où je suis allé au Kosovo, à Cuba, à Lagos, en Serbie, à Saint Denis (France), à Hiroshima, Moscou, ou Johannesburg... Ce qui me guide s'appuie
sur une esthétique en devenir constant mais aussi sur une éthique qui fait la différence et qui structure toute mon approche. Avec mon initiative privée de Centre d'Art "BANDJOUN STATION"

au Cameroun et le projet artistique qui l'accompagne, j'ai voulu prendre mes responsabilités d'homme et d'artiste en offrant d'autres modèles, d'autres références. En aucun cas, de près ou de plus
loin, mon nom ne peut être rapproché de celui de SINDIKA DOKOLO

ou de la collection qu'il a pu constituer au fil des années. Je respecte chacun des artistes dont les œuvres y figurent, mais je ne souhaite en aucune manière y rattacher ma démarche artistique. Je suis sûr que d'autres occasions se présenteront dans l'avenir qui peuvent faire coïncider art et éthique, pour notre bien à tous dans le Monde.

I'm afraid I must regretfully decline the invitation to participate in your project for the next Venice Biennale for the following reasons: As an artist born on the African continent, for the last 20 years I have attempted to follow an artistic path which is multidisciplinary, international and ambitious, and there have been occasions when, as an artist, I have observed waywardness, tragedies and misdeeds, such as "Head Above Water," everywhere have been - in Kosovo, Cuba, Lagos, Serbia, Saint Denis (France), Hiroshima, Moscow, Johannesburg...What guides me is a constantly evolving aesthetic but also
a sense of ethics which makes a difference and structures my entire approach. With my private initiative, "BANDJOUN STATION"

I am sure that other occasions in which art and ethics may cohabit will present themselves in the future, for the good of everyone in the world.
