SINGAPOUR , Parkview Museum: "Disturbing Narratives"
CURATED BY LORAND hEGYI, 27/06/2019- 08/02/2020
Disturbing Narratives presents over 30 artists from Europe, Asia, Africa and North & South America who are working with completely different visual languages and media: spanning painting, drawing, photography, video, sculpture and installation. In the process of selecting artworks in accordance with the theme and the subject matter of Disturbing Narratives, the autonomy of each work of art has been maximally respected in relation to their presentation within the context of the thematic exhibition as a total work of art. A work of art does not serve to illustrate, but rather to generate new meanings, create new associations, and sensitize our relation to the sphere of human experience that it incorporates. The exhibition reflects empathy, sensibility, imaginative richness and radically freed phantasy, in which the artists of our days are approaching the unlimited complexity of life and history. The artists don’t tell us anecdotes, they are not “story-tellers” -- they create poetically powerful, deeply touching, often enigmatic, mysterious, dramatic metaphors, which reveal the disturbing perspectives and frightening darkness behind the surface of normality. At the same time, the artist’s works manifest hope and empathy, the liberating power of consciousness of the “real”, the enthusiastic value of the truth. In this sense, all the unusual and disturbing images, all the surprising, strange, extremely vivid, almost aggressive, burning and torturing, profoundly de-stabilizing moments and irritating shapes of improbability and uncertainty work like liberation, they take us back to ourselves, show us the deep, often hidden roads, which are directing us to the “real”.

FRANCE, ABAYE DE DAOULAS, "Liberté, Egalité, Diversité"
14 juin 2019 - 05 janv. 2020

"INCARNATIONS" African Art As Philosophiy.
curator: Kendell Geers , 28 June-06 October /2019.

Barthélémy Toguo's multi-disciplinary work addresses migration, colonialism, race, and the relationship between the global north and south. For his first solo exhibition in an American museum, The Beauty of Our Voice, Toguo is expanding his gaze to the U.S. with new watercolor paintings, installations, photography, performance, and a community art project. He created some of the works during a residency in June at The Watermill Center in a unique new collaboration between the Parrish and Watermill who invited him as their 2018 Inga Maren Otto Fellow.

"Body Language"
Curated by Abbe Schriber, Curatorial Assistant
Jul 18, 2013 - Oct 27, 2013
Body Language explores the body and written or verbal expression. Comprised mostly of works from the Studio Museum’s permanent collection, the exhibition shows how artists use language to evoke relationships to bodies, including those of viewers, using the human form to communicate ideas much as words might. Some of the artists investigate the language of nonverbal communication, while others inscribe, paint or gesture onto the page. Other works depict figures to purposefully elicit a “read”—how might audiences interpret a portrait differently than the artist’s (or author’s) intention? Body Language also illustrates the international scope of the Museum’s collection, with work by Deborah Grant, Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Valerie Piraino, Malick Sidibé, Tavares Strachan, Barthélémy Toguo, among others.

Against the Grain; Wood in Contemporary Art, Craft and Design
October 12, 2013 – January 20, 2014
Featuring nearly 90 installations, sculptures, furniture and objects, Against the Grain: Wood in Contemporary Art, Craft and Design, explores the most cutting-edge conceptual and technical trends in woodworking today by artists and designers including Sarah Oppenheimer, Martin Puryear, Marc Andre Robinson, Alison Elizabeth Tayor, Ai Weiwei, Maartin Baas, Sebastian Errazuriz, Barthélémy Toguo, Mark Moskovitz and Ursula von Rydingsvard, among others. The exhibition emphasizes the way artists, designers and craftspeople have incorporated post-modernist approaches and strategies into woodworking – deconstructing vessel shapes, playing on the relationship between function and form, and utilizing woodturning and furniture techniques in the creation of sculpture. The works challenge traditional applications of wood within the design and craft worlds, and exemplify the wide-ranging, often unexpected approaches to the medium.
Against the Grain: Wood in Contemporary Art, Craft and Design is organized by the Museum of Arts and Design, New York and curated by Lowery Stokes Sims, Charles Bronfman International Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design, assisted by Elizabeth Edwards Kirrane, Assistant Curator at MAD.

TIME FOR CHANGE: ART AND SOCIAL UNREST IN THE JORGE M. PÉREZ COLLECTION
Curator: Curator: José Roca .
Huipiles is a series of paintings based on traditional designs of this type of clothing, made with a natural pigment extracted from coal and copal smoke. The use of these techniques is the continuation of a series of works by the artist that investigate and use natural pigments.
This series explores the geometry of the textile design, which proposes two types of abstraction: the use of canvases with the same measure of the clothing that refers to the body without having it present, as an absent body; and the removal of the color to translate the uniqueness of each colorful design in a binary language, in this case, the black and white.
The word huipil comes from the Nahuatl word “Huipilli” which means “mi tapado,” (my cover) this costume is an integral part of the daily and ceremonial life of women and constitutes a collective, tangible and intangible language of great diversity.
Among women, this clothing serves to reflect their identity and distinguish their ethnicity and even their socioeconomic position.
The huipil consists of a rectangular cloth, folded in half with an opening in the head and generally sewn on the sides, leaving the top part untied to form the sleeve.
The huipil is a canvas with an unwritten history, a portrait where the memory of a people is reconfigured and preserved; it contains multiple meanings of a cultural, social, economic, and political character. The symbolism in this clothing is understood as a “textile language.”

curator: Alicia Knock
https://www.centrepompidou.fr/cpv/resource/c586Eyq/r956Kea

What about Africa?' gives an impression of the quality of contemporary African art. We did not want to restrict the presentation by selecting works relating to a specific theme. We have deliberately based it on personal choice. Saying that, we have tried to cover as great a diversity of disciplines as possible, to have a variety of ages, to guarantee a wide range of subject matters, to make the distribution across Africa as broad as possible and to make no distinction between artists who live and work in Africa and artists in the Diaspora.

The Cuban historian Manuel Moreno Fraginals summarises in a sentence the suffocating atmosphere that pervaded African people on the American continent. “The issue here is trying not to die.” Undertaken out of extreme urgency, struck by the physical and psycho- logical violence of slavery, the black community has found its survival space in its culture and in particular in musical expression, that would become, in the twentieth century, the most powerful and diversified range of musical genres in the world: Blues, Jazz and Rock and Roll in the United States, Samba in Brazil, Mambo and Guaguancó in Cuba, Merengue in the Dominican Republic, Candombe in Uruguay, etc.
From Africa we inherited rhythms, different types of religiosity, a multitude of spices and products, but above all we were confronted with forced migration, as the result of African slavery that brought millions of men and women who in fact became the basis of both agricultural and industrial development for many colonies and future western republics. The wealth of sugar, tobacco, coffee, cocoa, as well as many other food industries, would be unthinkable without the African workforce.
Aqui Africa assembles a unique proposal of contemporary African art including painting, sculpture, photography, video, films and music.

Two gigantic chairs stuck directly in the middle of the nave inside Saint-Anne’s chapel,
one laden with bundles of material, the other with large wooden stamps, both surrounded
by loads of others, normal sized: Barthélémy Toguo occupies the territory. In the
chancel, a pyramid of more bundles, in the lateral alcoves, additional stamps
simply placed on tables. All multicolored, multicultural and multinational, his work
proceeds from an open, altruist reflection about man’s destiny and the way the world works.
Homelessness, displacement, evocation, Toguo stages all sorts of drifting, testimony
of his will to embrace the world. A work open to all horizons and all
winds when the spirit breathes with humanity in perpetual movement.
